David Beckham will not make his debut for the Galaxy against Chelsea at the Home Depot Center on Saturday as planned. Everything depends on the status of his injured left ankle, and on Monday it was still swollen and sore. Beckham injured the ankle while playing for England in a Euro 2008 qualifying game against Estonia in early June, and was still suffering the effects when he helped Real Madrid win the Spanish league championship on June 17.

"With ankles, they do tend to clear up pretty quickly, if there’s no structural damage, which there isn’t," Coach Frank Yallop said. "It’s just that swelling and that soreness that he’s got to get out of his system."

Once Beckham is playing again, it’s hard to imagine Galaxy losing even a single game. He’s like the Orkin man snuffing out an ant colony.

Now the not-so-new best friends are entering new territory with reports that Tom Cruise is launching a £40 million takeover bid of Beckham’s new football club, LA Galaxy.

The football star will officially join the club next month on a five-year deal, which netted him a cool £128 million.

As Cruise, 44, is a huge football fan he has allegedly decided he wants to plough his money into the up and coming LA football club.

A source close to Cruise said: ‘To have Tom’s backing would be amazing – there’s no way Galaxy bosses would turn down that opportunity.’

Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham will either be thrilled or uncomfortable. Katie being the wife of the boss of Becks might strain the master-teacher nature of their friendship.

Maybe Posh could start emulating Katie’s style, like Britney Spears wants to.
