Pat O’Brien Drunken-Coked Out Calls Cost Him His Job

The party’s over for TV’s Pat O’Brien. The New York Daily News says the mustachioed host will leave the Insider show following Paramount’s decision not to renew his three-year, $4 million contract.

The source adds that focus groups played a part in O’Brien’s demise. After he was caught on voicemail in 2005 trying to convince a lady friend to "go crazy, get some coke," and do other things with him and a prostitute, "people just didn’t like Pat anymore," says the source. "They were creeped out."

What’s more, the source adds, "It was harder to get female stars to do interviews with him."

To fill the vacuum created by O’Brien’s departure, Paramount plans to move Lara Spencer from New York to Los Angeles and make her the show’s primary host, claims the source.

The News reported earlier this week that she is also a candidate to join NBC’s Today when it adds a fourth hour later this year. An Insider spokesperson declined to comment on the Spencer move, and said of O’Brien, "Pat O’Brien has been with The Insider since Day 1. He is currently under contract to us. We are in discussions to continue his deal."

Not only does Paramount have no intention of reaching a deal with O’Brien but it is partially to blame for his failed image resuscitation. It was a mistake, the source says, to force O’Brien to talk about the scandal on Dr. Phil only a month after he went into rehab. "Paramount really messed him over," he says. "He was 30 days sober, and all of a sudden he has to talk about this stuff on national TV. That’s not a recovery plan."

Pat O’Brien was a host on The Insider on CBS and was previously a host on CBS shows such as Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood.

A better plan to revitalize his career would have been to have O’Brien host Saturday Night Live, and do a skit which mocked his own phone messages, then maybe a crotch shot or two, hit the town with Paris Hilton, have a romantic affair with Lindsay Lohan, check himself into the hospital for a broken leg, check himself out the next day and go skiing in Colorado with photogs in tow, and then get married and divorced in Las Vegas over the next 24 hours. Follow all that with rehab, release a music album, a movie cameo, and you’ve got yourself a superstar.
