Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard Have a Baby Girl!

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and her fiancé of nearly five years, actor Peter Sarsgaard, are over the moon after giving birth to their first child, a girl, around 8 p.m. last night an insider said.

Maggie and Peter named the child Ramona after a character in the Beverly Cleary children’s book series, which was a childhood favorite of Maggie’s, says the insider. The moments leading up to the birth were tense, as 28-year-old Maggie went into labor two weeks before her due date and was rushed to a New York City hospital, the insider says.

“Although it was a frightening time for Maggie and Peter, thank God the baby was born healthy,” the insider says. “She and Peter are thrilled with their beautiful new bundle of joy.” The insider adds that Maggie’s brother Jake Gyllenhaal is ecstatic and eager to meet his new niece. The couple have not yet set a wedding date – but now have a reason to start checking their calendars. “Maggie and Peter have always wanted to get married, but with their busy schedules, they just didn’t have time,” explains the insider. “Now that Ramona is here, they have an added incentive to take that walk down the aisle.” Congratulations!

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marie Claire

  Share

When Marie Claire decided to redesign its image starting with the September issue, it chose Maggie Gyllenhaal as its cover girl. Though she has four movies coming out this fall, the 28-year-old actress found time to talk about her pregnancy, her famous brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, and her unique sense of style.

On being turned down for parts:
“There was a long time of not getting anything, or even coming close, and lots of feedback like, ‘You’re not sexy or beautiful enough.’ I was tough on the outside – ‘You must have a boring idea of what beautiful and sexy is’ – but on the inside, that’s a hard thing to hear.”

On her body:
“I never fell into worrying too much about my body. That’s not to say that I don’t think about it. I exercise, and at certain times I like my body better than others-but I never went crazy about it.”

On whether there’s any sibling rivalry between her and brother Jake:
“I’m so bored with that question. I have a brother; we fight sometimes, we support each other.”

On her fiancée Peter Sarsgaard:
“He’s so excited about the baby. It’s more important to him than he thought it would be to be with me during my pregnancy.”

“We don’t want to just go to City Hall [to get married]. I want the fairy tale. I’ve had many different incarnations of my fantasy wedding dress.”

On clothing:
“Clothing, for me, is expressive. It’s very important to me that I feel connected to what I’m wearing….What I think is appealing about shopping is putting something on and asking, ‘Is this me?’ Which is another way of asking, ‘Who am I?’”
