Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake FCC Superbowl Fine Thrown Out
Posted on July 21, 2008 at 7:51 am (PST)
On Monday a federal appeals court threw out a $550,000 indecency fine against CBS Corp. for the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show that ended with Janet Jackson’s breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction." The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Federal Communications Commission "acted arbitrarily and capriciously" in issuing the fine for the fleeting image of nudity.
The court found that the FCC deviated from its nearly 30-year practice of fining indecent broadcast programming only when it was so "pervasive as to amount to ’shock treatment’ for the audience."
"Like any agency, the FCC may change its policies without judicial second-guessing," the court said. "But it cannot change a well-established course of action without supplying notice of and a reasoned explanation for its policy departure."
The fine was one of the biggest in history, and it appears also one of the most unfair.

Justin Timberlake to Produce New Reality Show

MTV has given the green light to Justin Timberlake who will be the executive producer of a new reality TV show. The show is called The Phone, which is based on a Dutch reality show format, beginning each episode with two hidden cell phones ringing at opposite ends of a major city. Contestants who answer the phones will have five seconds to decide if they want to play along for a cash prize, and then a guide on the other end of the line gives them a mission to complete before the time runs out.
As they embark on their adventure, a helicopter tracks their every move. MTV describes the show as a wild and cinematic ride reminiscent of films like The Bourne Identity and The Game.
Tony Disanto, MTV executive vice president of programming and series development, said in a statement:
"Genre-busting and reinvention is at the core of what we do, and The Phone does just that. Each week will be an action-packed mini-movie."
The show will debut this fall, but has no specific launch date yet.
The concept of The Phone reminds me a lot of the 2002 movie Phone Booth starring Colin Farrell. It sounds like it could be a great show as long as there are some creative writers to keep things interesting. Justin hasn’t had a lot of success in front of the camera, so maybe he’ll do better behind the camera.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are Still Together

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel attended a wedding last night in Los Angeles. They walked in holding hands, so I guess that proves they are still a couple. A wedding at night? Seems like something vampires would do.

On Thursday, Justin Timberlake gave two separate donations of $100,000 to the Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum and the Memphis Music Foundation. Timberlake, who is in his hometown filming the indie flick, The Open Road, said:
"Music education and keeping the legacy of Memphis Music alive has always been important to me. That is why I will always continue to support my home town the same way they have always supported me."
Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Executive Director John Doyle said:
"Justin Timberlake has never deserted Memphis, Tennessee. He has never stopped giving back to the community, to the local music industry, and to young people."
It’s always nice to see celebrities give back.
