Chaperoned by Oliver Stone, Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett reunite Tuesday at the director’s New York City screening of World Trade Center. Work had kept the Black Dahlia costars separated for most of July, fueling rumors of a breakup.

However, seeing the pair together, but separated by Stone, doesn’t confirm they are back together either.

Master storyteller Brian De Palma, known for such classic crime dramas as The Untouchables, Scarface and Carlito’s Way, as well as his suspense thrillers Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, directs this adaptation of James Ellroy’s (L.A. Confidential, American Tabloid) best-selling crime novel.

The Black Dahlia weaves a fictionalized tale of obsession, love, corruption, greed and depravity around the true story of the brutal murder of a fledgling Hollywood starlet that shocked and fascinated the nation in 1947 and remains unsolved today. Two ex-pugilist cops, Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) and Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett), are called to investigate the homicide of ambitious silver-screen B-lister Betty Ann Short (Mia Kirshner) A.K.A. “The Black Dahlia”–an attack so grisly that images of the killing were kept from the public.

While Blanchard’s growing preoccupation with the sensational murder threatens his marriage to Kay (Scarlett Johansson), his partner Bleichert finds himself attracted to the enigmatic Madeleine Linscott (two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank), the daughter of one of the city’s most prominent families–who just happens to have an unsavory connection to the murder victim.

True crime meets urban legend when De Palma brings Ellroy’s The Black Dahlia to the big screen. The movie opens September 13, 2006.

The Black Dahlia story is a sick tale of a serial killer that was never caught, even though it is thought the identity of the killer was known. It is suspected he moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles, then fled the country for the remainder of his life. He was never brought to justice. The person who believes he knows the identity of the killer is a police detective who happens to be the son of the accused man. It is terrible what happened to this innocent girl.

Admired and desired though he is, Josh Hartnett was apparently a little anxious about his girlfriend Scarlett Johansson hanging out with that noted Lothario Wilmer Valderrama in the Hamptons last weekend.

The two staying very much by each other’s side at hotspots Stereo House and Star Room over the July 4th weekend, and, according to the New York Daily News’ Ben Widdicombe, Hartnett continuously called Johansson on her cell phone. At one point, reports a partygoer, “Scarlett just handed her phone to Wilmer and said, ’Talk to Josh. Tell him we’re friends.’” No word on the level of reassurance that this provided Hartnett.

Josh Hartnett has been spotted flirting/dating sexy blond Scarlett Johansson-esque types around NYC’s Lower East Side, while his girlfriend has been shooting The Nanny Diaries on Long Island. So when Hartnett showed up at NYC hotspot Max Fish at 2:30 a.m. last Monday with his arm around a comely Finnish lass, rumors started circulating that it was curtains for the couple. “There was a lot of touching,” says the witness, who also observed “whispering” and “giggling” while the pair played pool.
