American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry will perform a free concert in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina on March 23.

Greensboro Coliseum officials organized the show as a prelude to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament games on March 24 and 26, and they hope the concert helps the city’s bid to host the 2012 women’s Final Four.

Between 6,000 and 7,000 people are expected to attend the concert.

Over the past year, Daughtry, 27, has gone from a local musician based in nearby McLeansville to a fourth-place "Idol" finish and a top-selling album.

Daughtry’s band, called Daughtry, released their self-titled debut album on Nov. 21. "Daughtry," released on Sony BMG’s RCA label, has sold nearly 1.3 million copies and hit No. 1 this week on the strength of its first single, "It’s Not Over."

While many observers billed Daughtry as the favorite to win "Idol" last year, he was voted off News Corp.’s Fox network talent show a few weeks before its finale. Southern soul singer Taylor Hicks took the competition’s top award, a $1 million recording contract.

The cost for the concert wasn’t released, and organizers said it’s in flux. They expect to recoup most of the cost through concession sales and sponsorships.

Chris Daughtry “American Idol” sent rocker Chris Daughtry home Wednesday night, but Daughtry’s fans aren’t quite ready to let him go. At least one online petition, with more than 16,000 names attached, is calling for a recount of the “American Idol” votes. MSNBC.com said it received numerous e-mails and bulletin board posts claiming that voters who dialed the first of Daughtry’s two phone numbers were greeted by a recorded message from “Idol” singer Katharine McPhee, thanking the caller for voting for her. According to Wednesday night’s show, McPhee received the second-lowest number of votes, after Daughtry. The Associated Press cited Tracey Adams, a family friend of Daughtry’s, saying that fans from his North Carolina hometown were among those who heard another contestant’s voice when calling for Daughtry. One fan who wrote to MSNBC.com said: "They had another voting mess-up. When I called to vote for Chris, Katharine says Thanks for voting for me. I thought I dialed the wrong number, so I tried again to hear Katharine, again. People were trying to vote for Chris…not Katharine! That’s why Chris went home……GRRRR…REDO please!”

Other voters claimed that they were able to get through on both of Daughtry’s numbers and heard his voice, not McPhee’s. Still others said that despite calling solidly for two hours, they were never able to get through and place a vote for Daughtry.

A FOX spokesperson told MSNBC.com. “The producers and network have gone to great lengths to insure the integrity of the voting process on ‘American Idol.’ AT&T and the independent voting company that oversee the voting have confirmed that there were no issues with the phone lines after Tuesday’s show. While acknowledging that dedicated fans may be unhappy with the outcome, the system only reports the decision of the voting public. As we have said before, you can’t take votes for granted on this show. We encourage fans to support their favorites and vote for the person they want to see as the next American Idol.”

Bulletin boards, of course, also offer up their share of inaccurate information. Some Thursday and Friday postings claimed that Ryan Seacrest had made an announcement that he had read incorrect phone numbers, and that because of this, Daughtry would be returned to the show. A replay of the Tuesday-night show does not appear to show any incorrect numbers given, nor has Daughtry been returned to the show as of late Thursday.

The news wasn’t all bad for Daughtry this week. Thursday night he was offered a job with the band Fuel. Bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell made their pitch on the TV show “Extra.”

“Chris, if you are watching, we’ve talked about this before, and if you want to entertain it again we’ll take it and go,” Abercrombie said. The buzz around Daughtry for weeks has been that he could end up the band’s lead singer. He performed the band’s song “Hemorrhage” on a recent “Idol” show. “Daughtry did not appear to respond to the band’s offer. His wife, Deanna, has been quoted as saying she’s not sure what her husband will decide.

“He’s got a lot on him and hopefully he’ll have a lot of wisdom there,” she told the AP. “The public forgets so fast about those idols once they get off the show. I just hope they don’t forget about Chris.”

"American Idol" has faced complaints about its phone lines before. In March of last year, incorrect phone numbers were listed for contestants Anwar Robinson, Mikalah Gordon, and Jessica Sierra. The phone numbers are always listed twice for each contestant, once as a number and once in a kind of shorthand, incorporating the letters on the phone that spell out IDOLS.

For Robinson, Gordon and Sierra, the numbers spelled out using letters were correct, but the complete phone numbers printed below those numbers were incorrect. Viewers who called the second numbers intending to vote for Robinson, Gordon or Sierra would be instead casting votes for contestants Anthony Fedorov, Carrie Underwood or Scott Savol. The errors were not corrected before the show aired on the West Coast.

A FOX representative blamed the errors on an outside contractor and said that person had been reprimanded. The network then aired a new performance show the night after the incorrect numbers were shown, reopened the voting, and moved the results show from Wednesday to Thursday.

In a stunning turn of events, Daughtry, who was the odds-on favorite to win the American Idol competition, was booted last night.

Daughtry was on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS FM radio show in Los Angeles this morning, where the A.I. host, who is in on the secret, urged the singer to watch ’EXTRA’ tonight.

TMZ knows the name of the band, but they’re sworn to secrecy. They say, it’s a big deal. Watch EXTRA tonight.

Update: The luck has already started. The band Fuel has offered him a spot as their frontman. They first hinted that they were eyeing Daughtry in March when the group’s Web site said they were looking for a singer and liked his performing style.

Chris Daughtry Everybody saw Chris Daughtry being one of the three finalists in season five, so you can imagine the massive wave of shock sweeping the globe right now, as Chris Daughtry makes an impromptu exit from this years American Idol! This comes as the latest in a string of surprising results on the show, having seen Underwood-esque Kelly Pickler bow out, not to mention the final curtain being drawn on the shows teenage soulstress Paris Bennett. Indeed previous weeks have meant it was anyone’s guess as to who could have gone on Friday night. But it was to everyone’s great surprise to hear that Daughtry missed a place in the final three, losing out to Katherine McPhee. Daughtry showed massive promise during his time on the show, and his dedication to the genre of rock has won him hordes of fans. He was celebrated for having a definite idea of who he was as a performer, and his apt ability to diversify different styles of music to suit his own rocky style. You have to wonder though, whether Daughtry’s premature exit from the show is nothing more than a blessing in disguise. After all, could you see such an accomplished performer remaining locked into the boundaries set by American Idol? I much more imagine the singer being made front man of someone like rock band Fuel, as was whisperingly suggested earlier in the show. Yes, certainly, as one door closes, a hundred more open for Chris Daughtry, and though he wont be livening up our Friday evenings in for some time, I predict we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the near future! The audience gasped and shouted no, host Ryan Seacrest asked a shell-shocked-looking Daughtry, “Surprised?” “A little bit,” he answered. Judge Paula Abdul grew tearful. The other contestants, Elliott Yamin, Katharine McPhee, and Taylor Hicks also looked stunned. Tuesday night, Daughtry’s rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” drew unanimous praise from the three judges, prompting Abdul to tell the 26-year-old from McLeansville, N.C.,: “See ya in the finals.” Cowell was his usual self when it came to assessing Daughtry’s second song, “A Little Less Conversation,” however. Simon Cowell considered it “flat” and “not as good as the first.” Still, before the booted contestant was revealed on Wednesday, Simon said McPhee should be the one to go. On Tuesday, McPhee, 21, forgot the words to one of her Elvis songs prompting Simon to say: “It hasn’t been one of your best nights,” said Cowell. The finalist will be named May 24.
