Sarah Palin, was a sportscaster for KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska back in 1988 (video below) when she was known as Sarah Heath, before she married an oil company production operator Todd Palin.

Here are five more details about Sarah, who is John McCain’s VP pick, you may not already know:

  • Her youngest son has Down syndrome. When Palin announced to friends after 4-month-old Trig’s birth in April that he had been diagnosed with Down syndrome, she wrote them a private e-mail she said: "This new person in your life can help everyone put things in perspective and bind us together, and get everyone focused on what really matters … Those who love him will think less about self and focus less on what the world tells [us] is ’normal’ or ’perfect.’ "
  • She has a son serving in the Army. Palin’s son Track, 19, is expected to be deployed to Iraq this fall. "He’s looking forward to it and we’re proud of him," Palin’s husband, Todd, said. "He’s grown up a lot in the past year." Says Palin: "I’m proud of him but I worry."
  • Her husband Todd is part Eskimo. Together 20 years, Todd, also 44, and Sarah "always wanted enough [kids] for a basketball team," she says. Todd is part Yupik Eskimo and helps run a family commercial fishing operation in addition to a fulltime job as an oil company production operator. As a hobby, he races snowmobiles. He caught Sarah’s eye in high school and they married in 1988. "He was the best basketball player I’d ever seen," she says.
  • She’s a former beauty queen. The 1987 University of Idaho graduate says: "I did the beauty pageants to earn money for college." Adding in a Vogue interview, "They made us line up in bathing suits and turn our backs so the male judges could look at our butts. I couldn’t believe it." The former Miss Wasilla, however, prefers basketball and hunting and fishing to bathing suit and evening gown contests. "I love the outdoors."
  • She has a great sense of style. Palin may be comfortable in a fisherman’s vest or hunting fatigues, but on the job as governor she wears Kazuo Kawasaki designer glasses and black Franco Sarto boots.

… and Sarah is an amazing woman who represents a great example for women in America.

Sarah Palin doesn’t seem like a redneck to me.
She’s educatated and she hunts moose, so? The moose is used for food, and is good for you. What wrong with that? People in France eat snails!!There are other people in the world that eat stranger meat than moose. I consider her feminine. She looks feminine, and acts feminine!
The talk about her baby Trig not being her baby is just Gossip and not the truth. Why would anyone think this baby is not Sarah’s baby? Bristol is 5 months pregnants, Trig is 4 months old. Sarah Palin is 44 , 40 and 50 yr. old women- have a larger chance of having a down syndrome baby. Young teen girls like Bristol 17 do not have a big chance of having down sydrome babies. I saw Sarah Palin’s tummy on a video when she was pregnant.
I hate all the gossip about the down syndrome baby being Bristol’s child. I don’t see how it could be true at all, with Bristol not being pregant the months before Trig was born. Just something for people to chat about, just untrue gossip.
Does every mother of a teen girl who gets pregnant quit her job in the main stream, most of the time not!
Can you be with your daughter on a date and know everything that going on with her, even if your a stay at home Mom, certainly not!!! I think it’s sad that Bristol is getting married at a young age, the couple is trying to make the best of a tough situation -they didn’t want this situation right now more than likely!!
I say good luck to them instead of calling them names like red necks.
There are plenty of teen girl in this country that comes from elite wealthy families that have out of wedlock babies. and being the daughter of a Stay at home- religious mother does not necessarily make you immune from teen pregnancy. At times teens just make a very unthought out decision - very quick -and don’t think about what’s down the road perhaps for them . Don’t be so quick to condemm.
Sarah Palin is like a breath of fresh air with some good ideas and she’s a very strong woman when it comes to working for what she thinks is right for the middle class and families of the U.S.
She relates to middle income families and to families in general. I think she will be a great Vice President for the Republican Party!
    Go Sarah!Go!

Dear Stud, apparently you’re a stud in your own mind. Where did you learn how to count? Sarah Palin has 5 children not 6. You’re an uninformed idiot. Why don’t you surprise us with some more of your moronistic thoughts.

“Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.”

Well, if McCain had his way, it would not be her decision to make.

White trash breeds white trash. Didn’t take long for the skeletons to start flying out of the closet:

To rebut rumors, Palin says daughter, 17, pregnant
By Steve Holland 43 minutes ago
The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.

I am a moderate and I recognize desperation when I see it. The Obama campaign ought to thank McCain for this.Hher only experience in politics is serving as governor of a state with fewer people than Brooklyn for a year and a half. Sure this pick will energize the pro-life crowd, but it will also rejuvinate the pro-choice movement. Net result = 0. Obama will make history becoming the first african american President, inspiring Americans everywhere, and proving that achieving the American dream is still possible.

How is getting to the doctor early going to change the fact that your child has Downs? She could have aborted the child when she found out it wasn’t going to be perfect like many other people do.

She knew the child was going have Downs Syndrome very early on in the pregnancy. Her water broke during a speech to a convention. She waited another 30 minutes then caught a 6 hour flight back home. Not something a normal mother would do concerned about the health of her baby. Why did she do this?

An issue the republicans had with the democrats was Obama’s inexperience. Isn’t this move contradicting? Palin’s experiences is essentially non-existent with foreign affairs and such…
