John Edwards is embroiled in a love child scandal with a former employee for his campaign, the National Enquirer reported today. John Edwards’ alleged paramour is six-months-pregnant Rielle Hunter, a video segment producer who worked on his campaign last year. The 43-year-old has reportedly told close friends she’s pregnant with Edwards’ child.

The allegations have surfaced as the presidential candidate is in the run-up to the all-important Iowa caucus in January. And right by his side through all of this is his stoic wife, Elizabeth, who is fighting for her life against incurable breast cancer.

But the Enquirer reports that another former campaign adviser, Andrew Young, is taking the heat for the affair and the unborn child, and has relocated former New Yorker Hunter to his gated community in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife and children.

The Enquirer caught up with Hunter and Young in Chapel Hill where they both emphatically denied Edwards’ involvement.

"This has no relationship to nor does it involve John Edwards in any way. Andrew Young is the father of my unborn child," said a lawyer for the divorcee, who drives a BMW registered in Young’s name.

Young, whose lawyer also told the Enquirer that the 41-year-old was the father of Hunter’s child, left his North Carolina finance director position for the Edwards campaign last month — the same time Hunter "went into hiding" in Young’s gated community, the weekly reported.

Edwards’ lawyer also denied the former Senator’s involvement in the affair, adding that Hunter (pictured above, in 2004) would also deny it.

"Rielle has said from the beginning that the baby is John’s, but she appears willing to do whatever they want her to do to protect his candidacy," Hunter’s friend told the Enquirer.

"I think what’s taking place is simply a cover-up by Edwards’ campaign," the friend added, who also said that it seems unlikely a man would bring his family for dinner at the house of his pregnant mistress, citing a recent evening when Hunter had the Young family over for dinner.
