Okay, I am a bit shocked. There is obviously something going on with Joaquin. I hope he is not going down the same road as River. I have read he has multiple personalities, but who really knows for sure. I have seen several of his movies and I think he is a great actor. He grew up in an eccentric family and lives and eccentric life, but there is something more here…. As far as Letterman’s comments and jabs… in a way I can see he did it for the show, but he should have looked at the bigger picture and given him somewhat of a break and not been quite as much of a jerk to him. And the gum under the desk thing, I personally think it was priceless and I would have done the same thing. So what if he is chewing gum…. it’s not like you can really tell with the beard. I hope he gets the help he needs and straightens out.

I think it is a crime and a shame that a lot of people find humor in this disturbing interview. Obviously, Joaquin Phoenix is not “ok” at this point in his life. Whatever he is experiencing, drug use/abuse, emotional/psychological issues, it is not a laughing matter. It is hurtful and painful to see that our society is so ignorant about mental health issues and/or drug abuse. What if that was your brother, father, significant other on that stage?? Would you appreciate people laughing at them?? I am going to pray for Joaquin that he gets whatever help he needs. (and I am not a religious person.) He is a terrific actor and let’s hope he gets help and gets through whatever it is that he is experiencing. He certainly was not himself the other day. Thanks for reading.
I have worked in both the music and film industries for years and know, all too well, the eccentricities and dark corners of both. Actors and Musicians truly enjoy this way of life. To keep others guessing is something they often times get off on. After viewing Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman, I have stopped at two theories.
1.) He is BORED. He has starred in many amazing films throughout the years, has “been there and done that” and is most likely tired of hearing the same questions. Once an artist of any sort becomes type cast or feels that their audience has them pegged, some may act out in such a way that will only prove these fans wrong.
KEEP THEM GUESSING.
Publicity stunt perhaps? I’ve seen worse.
OR…
2.) Joaquin cannot handle the pressure of fame. It is no secret that he has struggled with the death of his brother for years now. Rumors of this were only reinforced when Phoenix supposedly broke down on the set of Walk The Line and had to be hospitalized after the disturbing scene in which Cash lost his older brother.
Phoenix could possibly be dealing with some sort of overwhelmed identity crisis.
OR PERHAPS, HE IS JUST AMPING UP HIS FUTURE AUDIENCE AND FANS. I MEAN, JOAQUIN WAS TERRIFIED OF SINGING ON WALK THE LINE. WHAT WILL HIS HIP-HOP MUSIC SOUND LIKE?
The guy was being filmed by his brother in law, Casey Affleck at the show. How much more do we really need here?
This is clearly a very clever approach at a publicity stunt.
If not that, I will eat my words and continue to watch as Joaquin changes forms in the future.
Good day.

Joaquin – you should be ashamed of yourself to take yourself as serious as you did on Letterman -Stop playing the “artiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiist”crap – It doesnt play well when you’re on vicodan –
Shame on yourself to the publicist/agent/ management team who put him on the show or told the the talent coordinator that he’d be GREAT to have on. Are you kidding me? This guy probably needs to see a shrink or get himself cleaned up in a detox program –
And another thing; How dare he stick his gum under Dave’s desk!
I am an Actor/Stand-Up Comedian in LA, and break my butt for every role I get in this town. I’d welcome the opportunity and shine if I could get to the “couch” on Letterman.
It boggles my mind that people in hollywood will kiss this guys a*s to get him in their studio pic, when they should be worrying about getting him help to form a sentence. have been a long time fan of Joaquin; his work is amazing and lacks flaw most of the time, but man did it show flaws tonight
hes a talentless hack and hes just realizing it.
