Jade Goody is Having Cancer Surgery

Jade Goody, who was recently diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer, checked into a hospital Friday morning to have surgery. Dailymail reports:
"It will either be a radical hysterectomy which will take eight hours or it will be another operation called smoothing the glands. It depends on what they find when they go in. If it is the smoothing the glands operation it will take around four hours. We hope it will be the radical hysterectomy because that means the cancer hasn’t spread. In that case she will be in intensive care for about 24 hours. We’ll find out in the evening when we speak to her surgeon. She is unconscious at the moment and it’s all going on as we speak. I spoke to her last night and she was as comfortable as possible and trying to be positive but was obviously feeling very scared as any 27-year-old in that situation would. She is in the best possible hands."
This is why pap smears are done once a year in the United States. Cervical cancer in the U.S. is usually caught early, and easily treated. In the U.K. pap smears are done every three years. Hopefully Jade will get through this, and will be healthy again.

“or it will be another operation called smoothing the glands”.
I’ve certainly never heard of this procedure before!
Cervical cancer in the UK, as well as the US, is usually prevented by simple treatment. Smears every three years is enough if people go for them when called and return for treatment if an abnormality is detected. Ignoring four abnormal smears in a row, and not attending for treatment when called for it by your doctor, is what causes a minor abnormality to develop into cancer. Yearly smears will not prevent it in these circumstances either.
