Jack Kevorkian, aka Dr. Death, will run for congress in the 9th Congressional district, which currently is represented by U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Township. Kevorkian will run as an Independent. He said:

“I have never been a political person. I have only voted once in my life. I’m 79, almost 80. That’s old. You can’t take my innate rights away from me without a fight. If you want to have 10 pounds of marijuana in your house, why not? As long as you don’t hurt anybody.”

He made at least one good point. Kevorkian will be fighting for individual rights, which includes the right to assisted suicide. He has assisted at least 130 people who were terminally ill, and spent eight years in prison after being convicted of second degree murder for one assisted suicide.

Being a convicted felon won’t restrict him from running for office. The only requirements to run for Congress is age and residency, at least 25 years old and a resident of the state. Congress does have the ability to remove members from office who are convicted of subversion or of a felony that constitutes a breach of the public trust. But the body has been reluctant to overturn the wishes of voters and has rarely had to use that power. Most members convicted of serious crimes have resigned from their seats.
