Edison Chen Apologizes and Leaves Hong Kong Entertainment
Posted on February 21, 2008 at 1:52 am (PST)
Edison Chen finally returned to Hong Kong and held a press conference at 3 pm in Kowloon World Trade Centre. Edison apologized in English to the girls involved in the naughty pic scandal surrounding him, and to all of Hong Kong, where the public is outraged. Edison said he will be away from the Hong Kong entertainment industry for an "indefinite period," he said "there is no time frame." This means Edison plans to work in Hollywood in the USA, and will return to Hong Kong entertainment once people move on from this scandal. He said he will do volunteer work while he clears his mind, which means he will be trying to rehabilitate his image with the public. The full statement Edison read is below:
Today I have come back to Hong Kong to stand before you and account for myself. I have never escaped from my responsibility. During the past few weeks, I have been with my mother and my family and my loved ones to show support and care and at the same time to have them support and care for me.
I admit that most of the photos being circulated on the Internet were taken by me. But these photos are very private and have not been shown to people and are never intended to be shown to anyone. These photos were stolen from me illegally and distributed without my consent.
There is no doubt whoever obtained these photos have them uploaded on the Internet with malicious and deliberate intent. This matter has deteriorated to the extent that society as a whole has been affected by this. In this regard, I am deeply saddened. I would like now to apologize to all the people for all the suffering that has been caused and the problems that have arisen from this. I would like to apologize to all the ladies and to all their families for any harm or hurt that they have been feeling. I am sorry. I would like to also apologize to my mother and my father for the pain and suffering I have caused them during the past few weeks. Most importantly, I would like to say sorry to all the people of Hong Kong. I give my apology sincerely to you all, unreservedly and with my heart.
I know young people in Hong Kong look up to many figures in our society. And in this regard, I have failed. I failed as a role model. However, I wish this matter will teach everyone a lesson. To all the young people in our community, let this be a lesson for you all. This is not an example to be set for you.
During my time away, I have made an important decision. I will whole-heartedly fulfill all commitments that I have to date. But after that, I decided to step away from the Hong Kong entertainment industry. I have decided to do this to give myself an opportunity to heal myself and to search my soul. I will dedicate my time to charity and community work within the next few months. I will be away from Hong Kong entertainment industry indefinitely. There is no time frame.
I have been assisting the police since the first day the photos were published and I will continue to assist them. After this press con., I have obligation to help them with their investigation and hope that this case can end soon as everyone I think has the same wish.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank the police for their hard work on this case. Thank you. I believe everyone’s priority now (and) my priority now is to stop the suffering and pain, for not letting this…we do not want to let this situation become more out of control. We need to protect all the innocents and all the young from matters like this. In this regard, I have instructed my lawyers to do everything possible within the law to protect all the innocents, victims of this case. I believe that a press statement is being issued as we speak on what my lawyers have advised me to do.
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for coming here today and listening to what I have to say. I would like to also apologize once again to all the ladies and their families, my family and to everyone in Hong Kong and everyone in our society. I am deeply saddened by this. And I apologize to everyone (who) has to go through this. I would like to also thank you for giving me this opportunity to say what I have wanted to say all along in my heart.
I hope, after today, I can have your forgiveness. With regard to this case, with everything, everything that has happened, I am deeply sorry. I hope you all accept my apology and give me a chance.
Thank you.

Edison did not appear to be sincere in his apology, but did do a good job acting like he was sorry. He’s had weeks to prepare for this appearance. Click here to read more about it.
Is Edison Really Sorry?

Yeah Edison is a victim of this whole turmoil, but don’t forget he is the origin. he is a perverted sick that needs to be dealt w/ the first place. i believe he is sincere in his apology for the moment or at least he has time to foster so. Will he really change after all? unless some divine power creeps in for his life, change is stubborn for him, its human nature! Only time will tell, hopefully he will have that chance that he asks for or not……

it’s a good move. better to back of from the hot spot awhile than beeing chased out or hated and forgotten later.
I think the speach was quite throughoutly written. Amateur enough for ppl to understand/believe that he wrote it himself and thereby sincere. scandals like this doesn’t bother the rest of the non-chinese world and this truly made him more known. bravo edison!

I agree, I still don’t understand why people insist on blaming just him and not the other girls involved. They were both willing parties and it’s true, even if he had shown those pictures to other people, like his friends, they were never meant to be distributed via internet to the national public.
I totally feel bad for him after hearing his apology. Granted, his dicisions were irresponsible and some of the damage irreversible, but I feel like he’s sincere in his apology. Considering also, all the deals he’s lost and all the families that’ve been disgraced with this incident, he is going to have to back out from the HK entertainment industry for a while. Especially, like a previous poster said, the people over there are a lot more conservative and a lot less forgiving.
I wish him well though. Any celebrity would lose diginity if private matters came out. His just happened to be taken a lot worse.

Sam. Do you need to go to University to act? No. Do you need to be able to write to be an actor? No. Only in Hong Kong do you have to go to University to do anything.
In Western countries many people are successful without going to Uni. But in HK this is just an excuse to keep the poor poor and the rich rich.

ok … giving back edison some credit
ATTN: SAM
edison’s english is good,… (ok…he’s no shakespeare but good enough for a normal native speaker level)
i watched the news… what he said had the same meaning as the passage above…. but whoever transcribed it, got it really wrong!! its not word to word…….it sounded more like the transcriber heard a translation of it (eg. Chinese)… then tried to translate it back to english again!

Well, Edison is courage enough to face the HK entertainment, family, public and HK ppl for apology. What about his ulterior motive to made the incident public and jumping over to Hollywood in the West? It is just too much for the HK entertainment, public and especially for the next generation people and the young to believe such can mess can happen in Film Industry.
Time can tell how ……..whether he is sincere about what he say “SORRY”!
Anyway, it is a bitter lessons for the girls involved in this dream world that proverb tought us “DON’T JUDGE BOOK BY ITS COVER”, it is better to have “INSIDE BEAUTY” than “OUTSIDE” just like EDISON……..
