We’ve got to hand to Britney Spears. As evidenced in her Dateline interview, the pop star has a knack for misusing air quotes, placing them in between words or around the wrong ones. A highlight: “I like to cook – [air quote] try [air quote] to cook,” she told Matt Lauer.

It got Us thinking: Did she “steal” the act from Friends’ Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc)? In a classic episode from season nine, the dim-witted ladies’ man couldn’t figure out when to air quote, so Ross (David Schwimmer) had to teach him.
