Brigitte Bardot (73) was found guilty on Tuesday by a French court on charges of "inciting racial hatred" by using a Muslim slur. The statement that got Bardot into trouble was:

"I am fed up with being under the thumb of this population which is destroying us, destroying our country and imposing its acts."

Where’s the racial slur? Sounds like an opinion. Is there no freedom of speech in France? The court fined Bardot $23,760, and gave her a two-month suspended sentence for voicing her opinion. The reason the court prosecuted Bardot was because Muslims complained about Bardot’s remarks. Bardot made the remarks to voice her complaint that Muslims would slaughter sheep without stunning them first during their Eid al-Adha feast. The court did not prosecute the Muslims for offending Bardot.

Bardot was convicted four other times over the years for similar offenses, one of which included writing a book that attacked gays, immigrants, and the unemployed. It seems the French courts are being used to silence Bardot for expressing her opinion, and belief in good values for French culture.

At 73 years-old, Bardot doesn’t have to care what people think of her opinion, but she does feel strongly enough to make her opinion known despite the consequences. It may not be considered diplomatic, but she is preaching good values like stunning animals before killing them so they don’t suffer.
