Avril Lavigne has been accused several times of working with another artist, then after stealing a song or two, never working with that person again. Chantal Kreviazuk is the latest to accuse Lavigne of stealing her music in a Performing Songwriter interview:

Performing Songwriter: We just did a story with Avril Lavigne, whom you wrote with…

Chantal: I find it funny that it’s in Performing Songwriter. I mean, Avril, songwriter? Avril doesn’t really sit and write songs by herself or anything. Avril will also cross the ethical line, and no one says anything. That’s why I’ll never work with her again. I sent her a song two years ago called “Contagious,” and I just saw the track listing to this album (The Best Damn Thing) and there’s a song called “Contagious” on it—and my name’s not on it. What do you do with that?

Performing Songwriter: Call the lawyers?

Chantal: See, I won’t do that. I’ll just tell you. Art should not be subject to that kind of controversy. Art should be pure. In my head it is, anyway.

Maybe Chantal hasn’t heard. Art doesn’t feed your kids unless someone pays for it.

  1. Diane says:

Any listener can hear that Avril mimics Chantal’s singing style. Initially I thought Avril a talented singer in her own right, but in her latest work she’s sounds like a mini-Chantal, which I’m sure Chantal finds grating. Stick to your own style Avril! And Avril should have known better than to title her piece the exact same as Chantal’s. There’s no excuse for poor memory (i.e. “oops – it was sent to me so long ago, i forgot.”) She could have selected another single word to capture the meaning of her song…but obviously took the easy route.

  2. The sad thing is that Chantal only tells part of the story here, and it’s a blatant misrepresentation. Lyrically and musically Avril’s “Contagious” shares nothing with Chantal’s submission, only the titles are the same. Nobody, not even the mighty Chantal Kreviazuk, has sole ownership of a single word title. That’s the real reason why she doesn’t sue, there’s nothing to sue about and she knows it.
