Amanda Brumfield Arrested for Baby Death

Amanda Brumfield, who is the daughter of Billy Bob Thornton, was arrested for the death of a 1 year-old child she was babysitting.
An autopsy was done which determined the child died from a fractured skull from blunt trauma to the head that led to a subdural hematoma, then the death of the child. Brumfield was arrested and charged with child neglect.
Brumfield told police that after the baby had fallen, she discovered her tongue bleeding, so Brumfield cleaned it with a paper towel. She then says she began playing with the child, feeding her bananas and fruit snacks, and said she was "happy" and playful.
Brumfield then said she laid the child on the couch next to her and fell asleep. She says was awoken sometime later by the phone and decided to take the child back to the playpen. When she lifted her, Brumfield told cops she discovered her body was limp.
According to police, the call for help didn’t come until two and a half hours after the original fall.
It is odd that Brumfield would lay down next to a child on a couch where Brumfield also fell asleep. Wasn’t she worried that she might smouther the baby, or that the baby might fall off the couch, depending on which side the baby was on?
Unless police can prove the injury was intentionally inflicted, it is difficult for even a trained professional to recognize the seriousness of this type of injury until it’s already too late, so this appears to have been a horrible and trajic accident.
Thornton released the following statement since his name is associated with the story about his daughter:
"Mr. Thornton is estranged from Amanda and has had no contact with her for quite some time, however when informed about this situation he commented that, ’Anytime a baby’s life is lost is an unimaginable tragedy and my heart goes out to the baby’s family and loved ones.’"
Not one word of support for his daughter. What a crummy father.

BTW, the police will not press charges on someone if the evidence proves an accident occurred (meaning no can be blamed). Charges being pressed indicates that they are holding her responsible.
Child neglect? A life was ended! At minimum, 1 count of involuntary manslaughter is more appropriate. Murder or child neglect, the result remains the same – a baby died while in her care.
At 1 yo, the cranial suture lines should have been sealed. In order to fracture a sealed cranium, significant force must be directly applied. The force generated by falling off a normal height couch is nowhere near enough to fracture bone – even for a 1 yo.
“Error in judgment?” (Providing alcohol to a minor is an “error in judgment.”) When an adult agrees to babysit, he/she inherently accepts responsibility for the minor, Claiming ignorance for “not know to call 911″ is a poor excuse.
Obviously blame cannot be placed on the 1 yo, so who else can be responsible?
HG, you are out of line for calling the father “crummy.”
On a lighter note, I appreciate the reply
HG, you should keep your personal opinion to yourself. You don’t know all the facts. Maybe she murdered the 1 yo baby. How do you defend someone who just murdered a helpless 1 yo?
Denny,
This woman was not charged with murder, but rather with child neglect, which indicates the police believe it was an accident based on the evidence. Assuming the police are correct, and the child’s injury was caused by a fall, then we are left to judge if the babysitter should have known to call 911 right away. In my opinion, most people would not know to call 911, or to take the child to the hospital, unless there is a visible bump or bruise on their head. The fact is a person can die from a closed head injury, like this one, between 24 to 72 hours after the initial injury if bleeding, or brain swelling becomes severe enough. I’m not going to condemn a woman for making an error in judgment that most people might have made.
Situations like this should remind parents it’s better to watch your own children.
